Michael Burry: El Hombre tras el Big Short

1971 – · San Jose, California

Biography

Dr. Michael Burry is the founder of Scion Asset Management and was famously portrayed by Christian Bale in the film "The Big Short." Originally a medical doctor, he gained legendary status for being one of the first investors to recognize and bet against the subprime mortgage bubble in the mid-2000s. He is known for his eccentric personality, his deep fundamental research, and his frequent "doom and gloom" warnings on social media.

Investment Philosophy

Burry is a "Scion of Value." He looks for deep-value opportunities that others are ignoring or running away from. His philosophy is rooted in the early teachings of Benjamin Graham but with a modern, cynical twist. He is a contrarian who is willing to be early (and look wrong for a long time) as long as his math is correct. He often focuses on "icky" stocks—companies in troubled industries or facing legal/regulatory hurdles that suppress their price.

Current 13F Portfolio Update

Scion’s portfolio is known for its high turnover. Burry often liquidates his entire portfolio and restarts with fresh ideas. Recent major bets have included "The Big Short" against the S&P 500/Nasdaq via put options and significant positions in Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and JD.com.
