What does market capitalization mean?
Market capitalization (market cap for short) is the total stock-market value of a company, calculated as share price × shares outstanding. It is the most important metric for assessing the size of a stock — and decisive for index weightings such as the S&P 500 or MSCI World, which weight constituents by market cap. A company with $2 trillion in market cap (Apple, Microsoft) carries roughly 7 % weight in the S&P 500 — bigger than entire sectors.
Which size buckets exist?
Investors broadly distinguish: Mega-Cap (>$200 bn) — global heavyweights like Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Saudi Aramco, Berkshire. Large-Cap ($10–200 bn) — established index members. Mid-Cap ($2–10 bn) — fast-growing, often under-researched companies. Small-Cap (<$2 bn) — higher volatility, higher return potential. Mega-Caps are defensive; Small-Caps more speculative — diversified portfolios benefit from both ends of the spectrum.
