Why Bitcoin still matters in 2026
After more than a decade of skepticism, Bitcoin has crossed every threshold that traditional finance once said was impossible: spot ETF approval (BlackRock IBIT, Fidelity FBTC), corporate balance-sheet allocation (MicroStrategy holds 200,000+ BTC), and outright sovereign reserve adoption (El Salvador, Bhutan). For European retail investors the question is no longer whether Bitcoin is a legitimate asset class — it is — but how much of a portfolio it should occupy. Most institutional researchers settle on 1–5 % as the optimal allocation: enough to participate in upside without exposing the portfolio to BTC’s 70 % drawdowns.
Halving cycles and what they tell us
Every roughly four years (210,000 blocks), Bitcoin’s miner reward is cut in half. The next halving — the fifth in BTC history — happens in April 2028. Historically, the 12 months after each halving have produced the strongest BTC rallies (2013: +5,000 %, 2017: +2,000 %, 2021: +650 %, 2025: +180 %).
