Vorabpauschale at comdirect — How the Tax Deduction Works

comdirect (a subsidiary of Commerzbank) is one of the oldest German direct banks and processes the Vorabpauschale like a classic full-service bank — but with a few specifics worth knowing. This guide explains when comdirect posts, what happens if your settlement account is empty (and why the checking-account direct-debit setup is a real advantage), and where to find the tax certificate.

How does comdirect deduct the Vorabpauschale?

comdirect uses a classic settlement-account model — separate from your checking account, which you may hold at comdirect or another bank. The mechanics:

  1. In early January 2027, comdirect calculates the Vorabpauschale for every ETF in your portfolio (value × 2.29 % × 0.7 minus distributions).
  2. The Vorabpauschale is reduced by the equity partial exemption (30 %) and offset against the Freistellungsauftrag.
  3. The tax is debited from the securities settlement account (not your checking account directly).
  4. If the settlement account is empty and you have a direct-debit arrangement with your comdirect checking account, comdirect pulls the amount automatically — no overdraft interest.

This direct-debit linkage is the core advantage of comdirect over pure neo-brokers: you don’t need to actively top up the settlement account — comdirect debits the Vorabpauschale via SEPA from your checking account if configured.

When exactly does the posting happen?

comdirect posts reliably between January 2 and 5. The posting is announced in the postbox as „Steuerabzug Investmentfonds — Vorabpauschale 2026″, together with an email notification.

What happens if the settlement account is empty?

Three possible scenarios — depending on your account configuration:

  • With comdirect checking + direct-debit linkage: Automatic SEPA debit from the checking account, no overdraft interest, no reminder. The default case.
  • With external checking + SEPA mandate: If you’ve stored a SEPA direct-debit mandate to your external checking account at comdirect, the Vorabpauschale is debited via SEPA.
  • Without direct-debit linkage: The settlement account moves into overdraft at the current rate of 8.99 % p.a. (2026) — significantly more expensive than at Trade Republic or Scalable. comdirect then sends a reminder requesting top-up within 30 days.

If the account stays in overdraft for over 60 days, comdirect can force-sell ETF units — but in practice, this almost never happens with retail investors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a comdirect checking account to avoid the empty-settlement-account problem?

No — you can also allow a SEPA direct debit from an external checking account. The comdirect checking option is more convenient and free. Alternative: a standing order in December for the estimated Vorabpauschale plus a 50 % buffer.

Do I get the tax certificate by post or only online?

By default, only online in the postbox. On request, comdirect also sends the certificate by post — setting under Personal → Mail Delivery.

What does an empty settlement account cost over several weeks?

Currently 8.99 % p.a. (as of 2026) pro-rata on the negative balance. For a €100 Vorabpauschale and 30 days of overdraft, that’s about €0.74 — manageable but easily avoidable via the direct-debit setup.

Are all ETFs treated the same?

No — comdirect automatically applies the correct partial exemption per ETF type (30 % equity, 15 % mixed, 60/80 % real estate, 0 % bond). You don’t have to do anything manually.

Can I cancel the Vorabpauschale posting in online banking?

No. comdirect is legally required to remit the tax. Deferral or cancellation is not possible.

Note: Data as of May 2026. comdirect may change overdraft interest, posting dates, and portal paths. The legal mechanics of the Vorabpauschale apply uniformly to all German tax-resident brokers. This guide does not replace individual tax advice.
