Charlie Munger: L'Architetto di Berkshire Hathaway

1924 – 2023 · Omaha, Nebraska

Biography

Charlie Munger was the vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and Warren Buffett’s closest partner for over four decades. While often in Buffett’s shadow, Munger was the intellectual architect behind the transition of Berkshire from buying "cigar butts" to buying "wonderful businesses at fair prices." A lawyer by training and a polymath by nature, Munger was famous for his "multidisciplinary approach" to life and investing.

Investment Philosophy

Munger’s philosophy centered on the "Latticework of Mental Models." He believed that to be a successful investor, one must understand the big ideas from all major disciplines—physics, biology, psychology, philosophy, and more—and use them as a checklist for decision-making. He was a fierce advocate for extreme patience and concentrated investing, often saying that "the big money is not in the buying and the selling, but in the waiting."

Current 13F Portfolio Update

While he primarily invested through Berkshire, Munger also managed the Daily Journal Corporation’s portfolio, where he held concentrated positions in banks (Wells Fargo, Bank of America) and Alibaba, reflecting his belief in the long-term potential of the Chinese economy.
