Share price divided by earnings per share – how many years of earnings you pay for a company.
A P/E of 20 means market value equals 20 times annual earnings. The inverse is the earnings yield (here 5%), which compares neatly with bond yields. Trailing P/E uses the last twelve months; forward P/E uses analyst estimates. P/Es only mean something compared with the industry, history and growth.
