Correlation

German: Korrelation

A measure between −1 and +1 of how similarly two investments move.

At +1 two investments always move together, at 0 independently, at −1 in exactly opposite directions. The lower the correlation, the more a mix reduces risk. Stocks are usually positively correlated with each other; stocks and high-quality government bonds have often had low or negative correlation in recent decades. In crises, correlations frequently rise.
