Diversification

German: Diversifikation

Spreading money across many investments that don’t move in lockstep – to reduce risk.

Owning many stocks almost entirely removes the risk of individual companies (unsystematic risk). The risk of the market as a whole (systematic risk) remains. Diversifying across countries and asset classes helps further, because they react differently to growth, rates and inflation. The opposite is concentration risk.
