Warren Buffett
Investment Philosophy
Warren Buffett is arguably the greatest investor of all time. His philosophy centers on buying wonderful companies at fair prices and holding them forever. Through Berkshire Hathaway, he has built a conglomerate spanning insurance, railroads, energy, and consumer brands, compounding capital at an extraordinary rate for over six decades.
At the core of his methodology is the concept of the “Economic Moat” — a sustainable competitive advantage that allows a company to fend off competitors and maintain high returns on invested capital. Buffett evolved fundamentally from his early mentor Benjamin Graham’s “cigar-butt” investing (buying mediocre companies at steep discounts) to Charlie Munger’s superior approach: paying a premium for undeniable, long-term quality.
He insists on a strict Margin of Safety and operates exclusively within his Circle of Competence. Key fundamental metrics include consistently high Return on Equity (ROE), minimal debt dependence, predictable earnings power, and a highly ethical, shareholder-oriented management team. By ignoring macroeconomic noise and focusing purely on the microeconomics of the business, Buffett transforms short-term market irrationality into long-term compounding.
