An exchange collects buy and sell orders in an order book, matches them into prices and, with its partners, ensures settlement. Major exchanges include the NYSE, Nasdaq, the London Stock Exchange, Euronext, Deutsche Börse (Xetra), Tokyo and Shanghai. There are also exchanges for commodities, power and derivatives.
