A trader who continuously quotes both a buy and a sell price, providing liquidity to the market.
Market makers are banks or specialist trading firms. They post a bid and an ask at all times and earn mainly from the spread, taking on the risk of holding positions they can’t immediately offload. At the NYSE, each stock has a designated market maker; in US retail trading, wholesalers execute many orders off-exchange.
