The volatility the market expects for an asset – derived from option prices.
Because expected volatility is the only input to the Black-Scholes model that can’t be observed directly, it can be backed out of option prices. High implied volatility makes options expensive. It often rises ahead of key events and collapses afterwards. The VIX is based on the implied volatility of S&P 500 options.
