Contango

A situation in which later futures contracts cost more than nearer ones – funds lose money when they roll.

In contango, a commodity fund sells the expiring contract for less than it pays for the next. With an unchanged spot price, it loses value. The opposite is backwardation: later contracts are cheaper and rolling adds return. The shape of the curve depends on storage costs, financing costs and current scarcity.
