A standardised, exchange-traded agreement to buy or sell a set quantity of an asset at a fixed price on a future date.
Futures exist on commodities, stock indices, bonds and currencies. Both sides post collateral (margin), and gains and losses are settled daily. Futures are used for hedging, speculation and quickly adding or removing market exposure. Commodity funds must roll expiring contracts, which costs return in contango.
