Andreas Halvorsen
Investment Philosophy
Andreas Halvorsen is a Norwegian-born investor who co-founded Viking Global Investors after serving as a senior analyst under Julian Robertson at Tiger Management. Viking has become one of the most consistently successful hedge funds in history, known for its rigorous fundamental research process and disciplined risk management. Halvorsen’s approach is classic long/short equity investing executed at the highest level — his team conducts deep fundamental analysis on individual companies, building detailed financial models and engaging directly with management teams.
Unlike many peers who have shifted toward quantitative or macro strategies, Viking remains firmly committed to bottom-up stock picking. The firm typically maintains 50-80 long positions and a comparable number of shorts, with a net long bias. Halvorsen is notoriously private and rarely gives interviews, letting his track record speak for itself: Viking has compounded capital at approximately 20% annually since inception, with remarkably low drawdowns relative to peers.
