Term premium

German: Laufzeitprämie

The extra return investors demand for holding long-term rather than short-term bonds.

Lending for longer means more exposure to inflation and rate changes. Investors want a premium for that, which normally makes the yield curve slope upward. The term premium moves with uncertainty about inflation, government debt and monetary policy, and was at times even negative in the 2010s.
