Stop order

German: Stop-Order

An order that only activates when the price reaches a trigger level – and then executes as a market order.

A sell stop (stop-loss) sits below the current price to limit losses or protect gains; a buy stop sits above it to buy on a breakout. The stop is only a trigger: if the price gaps through it, the order fills at the next available price – possibly much worse.
