Shareholders' equity

German: Eigenkapital

The difference between a company’s assets and liabilities – what belongs to the owners on paper.

Equity consists of capital paid in by shareholders plus profits retained over the years. The equity ratio (equity ÷ total assets) shows how much cushion a company has against losses. What’s appropriate depends heavily on the industry.
