A group of companies with similar businesses – the GICS standard defines eleven sectors.
The eleven GICS sectors are information technology, communication services, consumer discretionary, consumer staples, health care, financials, industrials, energy, materials, utilities and real estate. Sectors react very differently to the economy, interest rates and commodity prices.
