Shares of companies whose profits swing strongly with the economy – as opposed to defensive stocks.
Typical cyclicals include automakers, machinery, chemicals, luxury goods and travel. Defensive stocks such as food, pharma and utilities sell things that are always needed and swing less. In expansions cyclicals usually lead; in downturns defensives hold up better.
