Periodically resetting a portfolio to its target mix after market moves have shifted it.
When stocks rally, their share grows past the target and the portfolio becomes riskier. Rebalancing trims what’s overweight and tops up what’s underweight – automatically selling relatively high and buying relatively low. Once a year, or when a weight drifts more than five percentage points, is usually enough.
