Efficient market hypothesis

German: Effizienzmarkthypothese

The theory that market prices reflect all available information, so it can’t be used to earn systematic excess returns.

Eugene Fama distinguished weak (past prices), semi-strong (public information) and strong forms (all information). Strong evidence for the hypothesis is that most active funds fail to beat their index. Bubbles and anomalies show markets aren’t perfectly efficient.
