A bond’s fixed annual interest, expressed as a percentage of its face value.
A bond with a 3% coupon and $1,000 face value pays $30 a year – US Treasuries in two semi-annual instalments. The coupon doesn’t change when the bond’s price moves, which is why the actual yield usually differs. The name dates back to paper bonds, from which holders clipped small coupons to collect interest.
