CAPM

A model in which an asset’s expected return depends on the risk-free rate, the market risk premium and its beta.

Expected return = risk-free rate + beta × (market return − risk-free rate). Developed in the 1960s by William Sharpe and others, CAPM explains why only systematic risk is rewarded. Empirically it explains returns only partly, but it underpins many cost-of-capital calculations.
