Crypto Taxes in Austria & Germany

Austria (from March 2022): Crypto gains are subject to 27.5% KESt regardless of holding period. Exception: coins bought before 28 February 2021 are tax-free after 1 year.

Germany: Crypto gains are tax-free after a holding period of more than 1 year. For shorter periods, personal income tax rate applies. Annual allowance: €600.

What is Staking?

With staking you provide your cryptocurrencies to the blockchain network as security and receive a reward in return (typically 3-8% p.a. depending on the coin). It works similarly to interest on a savings account — however with significantly higher risk as the price fluctuates. Currently only eToro offers staking for European customers.
