Total return index

German: Performanceindex

An index that assumes all dividends are reinvested – unlike a price index, which tracks price changes only.

Because stocks drop by the dividend amount on the ex-date, a price index understates what investors actually earned. A total return index adds the dividends back. The headline S&P 500 and Dow are price indices; Germany’s DAX is quoted as a total return index.
