Spin-off

German: Abspaltung

Separating a business unit into an independent, listed company.

In a spin-off, shareholders of the parent usually receive shares in the new company. Conglomerates spin off units to sharpen focus or because the parts are valued more highly apart than together (conglomerate discount). Examples include GE’s split into GE Aerospace, GE Vernova and GE HealthCare.
