Short squeeze

German: Short Squeeze

A sharp price rise triggered by short sellers being forced to buy back at the same time.

When a heavily shorted stock rises, short sellers come under pressure and buy back – pushing the price higher still. Famous examples include Volkswagen in October 2008, when it briefly became the world’s most valuable company, and GameStop in January 2021.
