A company buys its own shares on the market, reducing the number of shares outstanding.
Buybacks increase remaining shareholders’ stake in the company and in earnings per share. They’re a flexible and often tax-efficient alternative to dividends. They make sense when the stock is cheap; at inflated prices they destroy value. Since 2023, a 1% excise tax applies to US buybacks.
