Government bond

German: Staatsanleihe

A bond issued by a national government to finance its spending.

Government bonds of stable countries in their own currency are seen as the safest asset in that currency, because the state can tax and, ultimately, its central bank can create money. Their yields serve as the benchmark for all other interest rates. Examples include US Treasuries, UK gilts and German Bunds.
