Free float

German: Streubesitz

The share of a company’s stock that is freely tradable on the market – excluding large stakes held by founders, families or governments.

Many indices weight companies by free float only. If a family owns 50% of the shares, only the other half of the market cap counts. A low free float can make a stock less liquid.
